Junior Coaching

Weekly Junior coaching programme

Welcome to our junior coaching programme at Prestonfield Golf Club! We offer children the opportunity to learn and enjoy golf at Prestonfield, coached by our PGA professional staff and our team of experienced and enthusiastic volunteer coaches. All our coaching team are PVG certified and trained in safeguarding.

We run classes for children of different abilities, so they get an opportunity to develop their skills and progress alongside children of similar levels. Many of our beginner golfers, who enjoy the coaching sessions, decide to join Prestonfield Golf Club as junior members.

WHAT DO WE LEARN?

‘Learn To Golf’ is Scottish Golf’s national coaching programme. Each of the 5 levels incorporates core modules, which teach positive life skills through fun activity as well as introducing participants to the fundamental technical elements of golf. The modules include developing physical skills such as speed, agility, co-ordination, and balance; developing technical golf skills in putting, chipping, pitching, full swing and bunker shots; fostering mental qualities such as self-confidence, perseverance and learning to deal with mistakes; preparation for playing on the course and participating in fun team and individual competitions; and understanding important elements of golf such as rules, etiquette, equipment, and safety.

We also have follow-on ‘Eagles’ levels for junior players who are ready to get out on the course, obtain a handicap, play in competitions, and represent Prestonfield through our junior teams.

WHERE DO THE CLASSES TAKE PLACE?

We have a practice putting green and teaching area close to the clubhouse on Priestfield Road North. We have a second practice area, accessed from Peffermill Road, which has two par-3 holes. We also have a new state-of-the-art indoor swing studio at the pro shop, which allows coaching to continue during inclement weather and throughout the winter months.

HOW LONG ARE THEY?

We run weekly classes of one hour duration at the weekends, in 8-week blocks from April to September, using our outdoor practice facilities. The indoor swing studio allows coaching to continue throughout the winter for our more experienced players.  The classes are taken by our PGA professional staff and volunteer coaches. To ensure the children get lots of attention and support, we limit our class sizes.

DO I NEED TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON GOLF EQUIPMENT?

No! Prestonfield GC will supply all the equipment needed for lesson participation, so there is no need to spend a lot of money. Juniors can decide to get their own clubs once they know they want to continue to play and spend more time on the practice area out-with the classes.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE BLOCK OF CLASSES?

We are keen to encourage our young golfers to continue practising and playing out-with classes. Children within our coaching programme are permitted to use the practice facilities at Peffermill Road out-with lesson times.

We also offer very reasonably priced junior membership. Membership allows our young golfers to start playing out on the course and take part in the wide range of junior events we have at Prestonfield.
